Brest

Set in a magnificent natural harbor known as the Rade de Brest, Brest is sheltered from ocean storms by the Crozon peninsula to its south. Brest has always played an important role in war, and in trade whenever peace allowed. Today it is the base of the French Atlantic fleet.

Attractions

Oceanopolis is an impressive attraction by anyone's standards. Showcasing 10,000 animals representing 1,000 different species, this state-of-the art complex features three aquariums: The Temperate Pavilion, which focuses on the fishing industry; The Tropical Pavilion, featuring a coral reef, sharks and tropical fish; and The Polar Pavilion with polar bears and penguins.

Activities

Visit the Navy Museum, also known as Musee de la Marine, to see the extensive naval history of Brest. Exhibits include historic maps, maritime paintings, sculptures and model ships.

Adventures

The Brest 2000 Tall Ship Festival is one of the most prestigious maritime festivals in Europe. The festival features more than 2,000 traditional sailing ships from all around the world, from Ethiopia to Brazil and everywhere in between.

Food

France is internationally known for its food and wine, and Brest (and the larger region of Brittany) is no exception. First and foremost is the incredibly fresh seafood you'll find in Brittany, specifically oysters and mussels from the English Channel. Another common delicacy is the crepe, which is a very thin pancake that can be eaten plain or with any number of toppings from eggs to chocolate.
